Article 1 – The Holy Scriptures

  1. The Holy Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments:
    1. Are the inspired Word of God.
      1. II Timothy 3:15-17; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
      2. Heb. 1:1; God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
      3. Ex. 4:15; And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.
    2. Infallible Word of God.
      1. Psa. 119:89; For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
      2. John 10:35; If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
      3. Isa. 40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
    3. A divine revelation, the original writings of which were verbally inspired by the Holy Spirit.
      1. I Cor. 2:12,13; Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
      2. II Pe. 1:21; For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
      3. I Pe. 1:10,11; Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
    4. They are the supreme and final authority of faith and conduct.
      1. John 17:17; Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
      2. Luke 24:27; And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
      3. Luke 24:44; And he said unto them, these are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
      4. Rev. 22:18,19; For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
    5. Inspiration is a special act of the Holy Spirit.
      2. II Pe. 1:21;For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
      3. I Pe. 1:10,11; Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
    6. By which He guided the writers of the Scriptures so that their words would convey the thoughts He wished conveyed, would bear a proper relationship to the thoughts of the other inspired books, and would be kept free from error of fact, doctrine, and judgment.
      1. Mat. 5:17,18; Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
