Freedom

  • Angliae jura in omni casu libertati dant favorem. The laws of England are favorable in every case to liberty.
  • Civitas ea autem in libertate est posita quae suis stat viribus, non ex alieno arbitrio pendet. That state enjoys freedom which relies upon its own strength and does not depend upon the authority of another.
  • Impius et crudelis judicandus est qui libertati non favet. A person is to be judged impious and cruel who does not favor liberty.
  • In favorem vitae, libertatis, et innocentiae omnia praesumuntur. All presumptions are in favor of life, liberty, and innocence.
  • In necessariis, unitas; in non necessariis, libertas; in utrisque, caritas. In those things which are essential let there be unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in both, charity.
  • Justitia est libertate prior. Justice comes before liberty.
  • Libertas est cum quisque quod velit faciat modo secundum leges bonas, communi consensu latas, certas, praefinitas, apertas. Liberty is (the condition) when each may do what he choses, so long as he acts in accordance with good laws, enacted by common consent, that are certain, predetermined, and clear.

  • Libertas est potestas faciendi id quod jure liceat. Liberty is the power of doing what is permitted by law.
  • Libertas est res inestimabilis. Liberty is an inestimable thing.
  • Libertas inaestimabilis res est. Liberty is a priceless good.
  • Libertas non recipit aestimationem. Freedom does not admit of valuation.
  • Libertas omnibus rebus favorabilior est. Liberty is more favored than all things.
  • Libertatis (est) sui quemque juris dimittendi ac retinendi esse dominum. It is part of liberty that everyone be master of quitting or retaining his own right. Cicero, Pro Balbo 31.
  • Nil tam proprium imperii ac libertatis quam legibus vivere. Nothing is so characteristic of dominion and liberty as to live in accordance with law.
  • Omnes licentiam habere his quae pro se indulta sunt renunciare. All have liberty to renounce these things that have been granted in their favor.
  • Quotiens dubia interpretatio libertatis est, secundum libertatem respondendum erit. Whenever there is an interpretation doubtful as to liberty (or slavery), the decision must be in favor of liberty.
  • Quoties dubia interpretatio libertatis est secundum libertatem respondendum erit. A doubtful interpretation of liberty must be answered in favor of liberty. Dig. 50.17.20.
  • Vita reipublicae pax, et animus libertas, et corpus leges. Peace is the life of the State; liberty the soul; and the laws the body.
