Article 3 – There is but One Living and True God

God is the only true and living God, without equal or rival.

1.Isaiah 45:5-6:

“I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.”

2.Deuteronomy 6:4:

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.”

3.1 Corinthians 8:6:

“But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”

4.Jeremiah 10:10:

“But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.”

God’s Nature: Immanent, Transcendent, Infinite, and Perfect

God is both near to His creation (immanent) and beyond it (transcendent), infinite in being and perfection.

1.John 4:24:

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

2.Isaiah 57:15:

“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”

3.Psalm 147:5:

“Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.”

Invisible and Immutable

God is unseen and unchanging.

1.Malachi 3:6:

“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”

2.1 Timothy 1:17:

“Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

Eternal, Almighty, All-Wise

God is eternal, all-powerful, and possesses infinite wisdom.

1.Romans 11:33-34:

“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?”

2.Psalm 90:2:

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

3.Isaiah 40:28:

“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.”

4.Revelation 1:8:

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

Most Holy, Loving, Merciful, and Gracious

God is perfectly holy and yet full of love, mercy, grace, and patience.

1.Exodus 34:6-7:

“And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”

2.Psalm 103:8:

“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.”

3.Isaiah 6:3:

“And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4.Lamentations 3:22-23:

“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

The Rewarder of Those Who Seek Him

God rewards those who seek Him diligently, yet He is also just and will not leave sin unpunished.

1.Hebrews 11:6:

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

2.Exodus 34:6-7 (repeated):

“Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”

3.Nahum 1:3:

“The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.”

4.Deuteronomy 32:4:

“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.”

5.Romans 2:6-8:

“Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath.”
